Reserve Firefighters
The Position: Firefighters will work with a full-time or reserve officer on 24-hour shifts as part of a three
or four-person engine company. This is a part-time, at-will position.
Examples of Duties: Under supervision of an engine company officer, respond to fires, medical aid,
rescue, hazardous material incidents, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency and non-emergency
incidents. Maintain a state of mental and physical readiness to respond to emergency calls. Participate in
training activities, maintain fire equipment and facilities, perform public education and fire prevention
duties, and assist in training reserve firefighters, as well as other duties. May participate in extended
period out of county strike team assignments, and/or extended station coverage during such
assignments.
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
• At least 18 years of age
• High school diploma or equivalency
• California State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 certification, or proof of Firefighter 1 certification in process
with California State Fire Marshal, or proof of completion of California State Fire Marshal accredited
Firefighter 1 academy.
• Current EMT-1 or EMT-P certification
• Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational Certification
• Residency within San Luis Obispo County and within 75 minutes of Cambria Fire Department Station 57
• Candidate must be tobacco free while employed with the CCSD
• Valid California driver’s license and proof of insurance
Shift Schedule:
Reserve Firefighters will work approximately four to six shifts per month, depending on need and
availability. Ten-hour daytime shifts may also be available. Available shifts will vary from weekday and
including weekends and holidays.
Reserve Firefighters must maintain a 100% drill attendance in order to maintain shift-work eligibility.
Drills are held on shift and quarterly from 0830 to 1600. Participation in other training events is
encouraged. All personnel are responsible for 100% of the material covered at training drills, and will be
held accountable for that information, including new policies, procedures and standard operating
guidelines.
