Job#10313 - Advanced Diagnostic Lab Research Assistant 2

 

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The research assistant will work under general supervision to plan and carry out research projects in accordance with specific plans in the Advanced Diagnostic Laboratory [ADL] of CWRU. This position will support in-house COVID-19 testing in the ADL. Responsibilities will include coordination of sample collection with University Health Services, processing of the primary sample, carryout RealTime PCR Assay of COVID and Housekeeping Genes on Primary Samples using Fluidigm Technology and reporting results of the analysis to contact at University Health Services. All procedures will be carefully executed according to a detailed predetermined Protocol and Workflow.

 

Essential functions

  1. Plan and carry out lab activities in accordance with detailed protocol and general workflow. All work will be executed wearing PPE. Work with a team to handle and process patient samples from collection to testing and results dissemination. Become an expert in a specific portion of the workflow. Gain expertise with ALL aspects of the workflow to facilitate seamless handoffs and to fill in when needed. Be alert to suggesting changes that could improve workflow. (60%)
  2. Collect and analyze data for the samples being processed. (10%)
  3. Carefully log in samples and record each step of procedure to ensure samples are accurately tracked through the entire process. (10%)
  4. Maintain equipment and workspaces to ensure no contamination of samples. (5%)
  5. Assist in overseeing inventory including reagents, PPE, laboratory consumables, etc. (5%)
  6. Learn new diagnostic test protocols and carry out projects based on needs of campus community. (10%)

 

Nonessential functions

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact throughout each day with supervisor and co-workers to discuss workflow, to ensure proper handoffs for the specific steps in the protocol, to maximize throughput and to confirm sample identify.

University: Daily contact with our representative from University Health Services to coordinate sample delivery and to report assay results. Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

External: Limited contact with vendors to exchange information, consult if questions arise with Vendor Products or to acquire supplies.

Students: No contact with students.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees, but will help train new staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and experience: Bachelor's degree and 1 to 3 years of related experience, or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of experience.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Ability to safely work with potentially contagious patient samples.
  2. Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to work in a fast-paced, changing environment, and conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines.
  3. Strong organization skills are essential; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines, as well as time management skills, and follow-through are all necessary.
  4. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy. This trait is essential for success in this position.
  5. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. To maximize efficiency, individuals will primarily carryout separate aspects of the protocol and handoff samples to a teammate. Therefore, the ability to collaborate effectively is key.
  6. Ability to perform basic molecular biology techniques and protocols.
  7. Possess a working knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a laboratory setting, including the ability to operate basic laboratory equipment.
  8. Knowledge of PCR assay set-up and use of PCR Clean rooms / hoods is desired.
  9. Knowledge and experience in a Clinical Laboratory is an asset. Prior service experience would be an asset.
  10. Ability to meet and maintain training requirements.
  11. Ability to adhere closely to instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  12. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  13. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. The employee will have exposure to hazards. The employee is expected to wear appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, coat, and eyewear and conform to the university’s protocols for safety.
