POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Digital Preservation Librarian 2 develops, documents, implements and oversees preservation workflows, procedures, and policies for Kelvin Smith Library digital collections and assets, both digitized and born-digital. The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with Preservation Services and University Technology team members, other library staff, and campus stakeholders to develop programmatic and sustainable policies and workflows to address digital curation and long-term digital preservation needs for the library.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide expertise in digital preservation and apply best practices; apply advanced techniques and technologies, and good judgment in the field; collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. Utilize a significant level of expertise within library science; contributions are recognized at the library and university; maintain knowledge about library emerging issues and trends and the role of the library; understand and articulate organizational positioning and strategic alignment. (25%)
- Provide expertise and guidance to executive leadership regarding digital preservation and apply industry standards to develop a sustainable digital preservation program. Maintain knowledge about emerging issues and trends and the role of the library in digital stewardship; understand and articulate organizational positioning and strategic alignment. (15%)
- Collaborate closely with Special Collections, University Archives, Preservation, and University Technology staff to ensure the creation and maintenance of Kelvin Smith Library digital assets according to current preservation practices. (15%)
- Provide consultation services to university faculty, students, staff, and other University Circle institutions to promote education on preserving digital materials and retrieving information from legacy media formats. (15%)
- Establish consortial participation with APTrust and serve as liaison contact for Kelvin Smith Library, represent the library at meetings and contribute to the advancement of the consortium and digital preservation as a field. (15%)
- Contribute to the library, the institution, and the profession through sustained and progressive scholarship, creative expression, and service at the state, regional, or national level. (8%)
- Contribute to and maintain a work culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging. (6%)

CONTACTS:
Department: The Digital Collections Manager has regular contact with the Preservation Services Team Leader and other team members to ensure the permanence of digital collection items. The Digital Preservation Librarian has moderate contact with staff on all levels of the organization to support the provision of library services. Occasional contact with managers and staff of other units in the library as required by projects.
University: The Digital Preservation Librarian consults occasionally with faculty, including assigned liaison faculty, faculty committees, and other department administrators to determine teaching and research informational requirements to make appropriate information management decisions. Work regularly with faculty to develop, review, and improve information management policies and procedures. Consult occasionally with other campus librarians to coordinate information management decisions for the provision of library services.
External: Participate in local, regional, and national organizations to maintain a network of informational professionals. Infrequent to occasional collaboration with colleagues in OhioLINK and other academic libraries.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may supervise non-exempt staff, student employees, and temporary full or part-time workers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The initial rank of the Digital Preservation Librarian will be based upon the individual's qualifications with regard to that person's professional knowledge, abilities, and skills; contributions to the profession through service and scholarly endeavors; and professional qualities consistent with university and library values.
Experience: 1 to 3 years of experience.
Education: Master's degree in Library Science or relevant area.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Ability to make decisions in area of expertise; can collaborate and partner effectively; moderately expert in Digital Preservation theory and operations and able to apply best practices; can use advanced techniques and technology to innovate; ability to perform or administer slightly complex or specialized duties; communicate effectively.
- Evidence of professional contribution publishing, creative contributions, presentations, and/or professional service at the state, regional, or national level); keeps abreast of the role and application of trends for libraries in higher education.
- Ability to work in and contribute to an environment of inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging.
- Adept in ability to develop, document, implement and oversee preservation workflows, procedures, and policies for digital collections, both reformatted and born-digital. These assets include, but are not limited to: images, audio-visual recordings, data sets, web archives, e-mail archives, social media archives, and 3D models.
- Thorough understanding of media formats, metadata standards, repository/digital object preservation standards, and digital storage standards.
- Knowledge of information architecture/technology stacks typically utilized in digital preservation operations to effectively communicate with University Technology staff about requirements, maintenance, and upgrades.
- Ability to meet consistent attendance.
- Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
WORKING CONDITIONS
General library/office environment within shared Preservation Lab space This position is eligible for the staff hybrid work program.
