Assembly/Kitting - Days
Summary:
Assembles machines, equipment, and their sub-assemblies following blueprints and other written and verbal specifications by performing the following duties. The individual should be familiar with and capable of using various types of hand and power tools. An assembler is also required to perform other miscellaneous tasks, as supervision deems necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reads and interprets blueprints and assembly drawings to determine specific assembly requirements.
- Plans assembly procedures, following specifications.
- Removes small quantities of metal to clean parts or to produce close fit between parts.
- Drills, taps, or reams holes.
- Aligns components and bolts, screws, or rivets them together.
- Installs moving parts, such as shafts, levers, or bearings, and works them to test free movement.
- Bends and installs pipe for hydraulic systems.
- Aligns and meshes gears in gearbox to assemble system of gears.
- Tests or assists in testing operation of completed product.
- Be able to move parts in and move finished product out of assembly area.
Education (or Equivalent Experience): High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications: Forklift training certificate or the ability to receive it.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities Required:
- Ability to read and interpret documents furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals and procedure manuals.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Be able to read and interpret blueprints.
- Must be able to read a tape measure.
- Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to fractional equivalents.
- Ability to interpret tolerances.
- Must be able to identify and measure material.
Physical Demands:
- Day shift is 8 hours; night shift is 10 hours
- Stand-continuously (8-10 hours)
- Walk-continuously (8-10 hours)
- Sit-may be continuously depending on the parts, but much less often than standing or walking
- Lift to/from floor-up to 50 lbs. occasionally (components), 10 lbs. frequently (components)
- Lift overhead-up to 20 lbs. rarely (components), 15 lbs. occasionally (components), 10 lbs. frequently (components)
- Lift waist level-up to 50 lbs. occasionally (components), 25 lbs. frequently (components)
- One or two hand carry-up to 30 lbs. for 5 feet occasionally (components), heavier items are moved with a hoist
- Push/pull-up to 53 lbs. force (total 105 lbs. force) with 2 employees to initiate large A-frame cart and up to 38 lbs. (total 75 lbs. force) with 2 employees to initiate movement of loaded carts, occasionally, loaded parts cart my take up to 40 lbs. force, occasionally

- Bend-frequently (to assemble small components or complete complex assemblies at various heights)

- Ladder climb-rarely (to reach upper shelves)
- Balance-occasionally (walking around parts/components, machines)
- Manual dexterity-frequently (handling small components)
- Firm grasp-frequently (using hand tools)
- Foot pedal operation-frequently (if operating forklift)
- Lifting more than 50 lbs. is performed by two employees or mechanical assistance is required

Environmental Exposure:
- May be inside 95% of day, outside 5% of day to deliver parts or bring in parts from outside, temperature exposure may be 70-100 degrees inside near ovens, and outside varies between -20 to 100 degrees + with high humidity in summer
- High elevations-moderate (standing on ladders or assemblies)
- Moving objects-slight (hoist, fork lifts, rolling carts)
- Noise level-moderate
- Slippery surface-slight (wet floor, sand/dirt on floor dragged in on forklift tires)
- Vibration-moderate (hand tools)

Vision and Hearing Required:
- Near vision and depth perception-significant
- Far vision-moderate
- Color discrimination-significant for those working with the electrical assemblies
- Hearing sensitivity-minimal
Protective Equipment: Eye protection, safety shoes, protective clothing, and ear plugs.
Equipment used to perform job: Hand tools, power tools, belt sander, forklift, bridge crane, overhead hoist, steel saw horse, hand truck, brooms.
