The purpose of this position is to perform mosquito control work that involves the operation of mosquito control equipment and the surveillance of mosquitoes, providing residents and visitors of Leon County with effective and environmentally sound mosquito control.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Performs mosquito surveillance. Sets up and collects samples from various equipment designed to sample mosquito populations. Assists in identifying and counting larvae and adult mosquito samples in the laboratory and/or in the field. Conducts surveillance of known mosquito habitats for larvae or adult activity using various techniques. Uses handheld GPS to locate and record habitat locations.
Performs mosquito adulticiding and larviciding activities. Mixes, loads and applies adult and larval mosquito control materials. Determines necessary routes and scheduling of assigned daily treatment orders. Uses map books and GPS units for accurate navigation and to correctly identify no-spray request locations, and avoid spray drift into them. Contacts residents that have requested notification of control operations in their area. Provides accurate documentation of all control activity, including location, material, rate, and amount applied. Determines what kind of treatment and amount of material is needed to control mosquitoes in an area. Assists in the calibration of helicopter, fog truck, hand held and motorized mosquito control equipment.
Performs equipment maintenance. Repairs and maintains backpack sprayers and other mosquito control equipment. Washes, cleans, and prepares trucks and equipment for proper operation. Performs minor repairs and maintenance on mosquito control trucks and equipment. Calibrates mosquito control equipment.
OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIES
Participates in public information and education activities. During property inspections, instructs citizens regarding mosquito control methods. Responds to citizen complaints in a professional manner. Assists callers with mosquito service requests and related questions. Assists in the preparation of community educational programs (life cycle kits or adult collections). Distributes mosquito control educational materials.
DIFFICULTY
Employee must use independent judgment in determining what areas to treat and which chemicals to use. Also, employee must adhere to deadlines and shifts in attention involving response time for service requests or larva treatment.

Supervision Received
Duties are described as somewhat defined and checked periodically by supervisor and/or lead co-worker. Guidance from supervisor is sought when there are citizen questions that the employee cannot answer.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT
Contacts are made with Fleet Management, Parks and Recreation, and the Warehouse Divisions for the purpose of coordinating spraying schedule, supplying requisitions, and repairing and maintaining vehicles. External contact is made with citizens to take service requests, respond to questions, and to access property.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED
Work is performed through the use of a computer, database software, specialized software such as INFOR, adding machine/basic calculator, vehicle and/or light truck, GPS unit, laptop, handheld ULV fogger, backpack sprayer, and truck mounted ULV sprayer.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed mainly outdoors in multiple locations. One is exposed to a variety of extreme weather/environmental conditions, vapors, chemicals, odors, insects, reptiles, poisonous plants, et cetera. The work environment is noisy, dirty, and dusty. Work is performed on changing floor/ground surfaces and with tools that cause objects to shake and vibrate. Work is mainly performed while standing, however duties may require employee to climb, crawl, balance, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, et cetera. The job requires an employee to lift/push more than 50 pounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of safe and proper pesticide usage. Knowledge of equipment calibration. Ability to deal courteously with citizens. Knowledge of Florida traffic laws. Ability to read aerial and ground maps for site locations. Ability to identify mosquitoes using identification keys. Knowledge of computer operation and software. Knowledge of mosquito habitats. Knowledge of equipment safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; six months of related experience is preferred.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid Florida Class "E" Operator's License, and have a favorable driving record.
Must possess or be able to obtain a CORE Certification within 6 months of employment.
Must possess or be able to obtain a Public Health Pest Control License within 6 months of
employment.
Selection Guidelines:
Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check, and drug testing.
FLSA STATUS: Position is non-exempt. Analysis: this is mosquito control work involving the operation of insecticide application equipment and the surveillance of larviciding and adult mosquitoes.
