Job Description:
Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Police Sergeant / Law Enforcement Officer II in the Department of Police & Public Safety. The successful candidate will provide supervision to police officers with responsibility for duty assignments and monitoring work performance. Longwood Police & Public Safety is an innovative and progressive department that conducts and/or oversees all police and security functions for Longwood University's approximately 5,000 students, staff, and visitors. This position is considered emergency personnel, which requires the selected candidate to report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, in the case of an emergency, or staff shortage, etc.
Responsibilities:
• Monitor the University by vehicle, foot, or bicycle patrol
• Evaluate and resolve complaints
• Investigate criminal and traffic incidents
• Provide leadership and training for subordinates
• Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have previously demonstrated or possess the ability to:
• Train, lead, and evaluate the performance of police
• Review and investigate crimes and/or complaints
• Review and approve records and reports
• Demonstrate the ability to develop incident action plans
• Exercise good judgment in emergency situations
• Effectively coordinate and develop events, shift assignments, and personnel coverage
• Apply community policing principles and practices to resolve issues
• Monitor employees during probationary/evaluation periods to measure adherence to policy, procedures, and protocol
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Previous supervisory experience preferred
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalency required
• Valid Virginia Driver's License
• Certified Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Law Enforcement Officer with no gaps in full-time employment larger than 6 months, and have at least 4 years experience as a full-time, sworn law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Prior campus and university experience preferred
Current Longwood and Virginia certified police officers are encouraged to apply. Must successfully pass an in-depth background investigation to include a credit history, medical evaluation, drug screening, psychological and polygraph examination. The successful applicant will be required to sign a 2-year employment contract with the Longwood University Police Department.
Additional Information:
Pay Band 4, hiring range $40,712 - $45,498. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits accompany this position. A fingerprint based criminal background investigation is required for positions designated as sensitive under Virginia Code 2.2-1201.1.
