Job Description

The Mechanical Systems supervisor provides leadership and overall responsibility for inspecting, programming and implementing the preventative maintenance program for all mechanical and electrical equipment on campus to include but not limited to the boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, Energy Management Systems, main power feeder line, electrical switch gear, auxiliary generator, plumbing and utilities ensuring a flawless equipment operation allowing the college to achieve educational goals for students and a safe and functioning structure for the staff .

 

This Position Reports to the Associate Vice President of Operations and supervises: a Building Maintenance Engineer, Journey level contractors 

 

This position will actively advance the college’s strategic goals, including to achieve equity in educational outcomes and to support a culturally responsive and service-oriented culture, through individual and departmental efforts.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2-year degree in Construction Sciences and Building Technology or equivalent work experience
  • 3 years of supervisory-leadership experience
  • Proven mechanical and electrical skills in heating and cooling systems. 
  • Knowledge and experience in principles, theories, and practices of preventative maintenance and preventive maintenance schedules implementation.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity, plumbing, HVAC and mechanics sufficient to troubleshoot systems issues and recommend solutions
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the operation of a Building Automation Energy Management computer system sufficient to control temperatures and air flow in the buildings.
  • A valid State Of Minnesota Second Class” C” boiler license or higher OR ability to obtain one during the probationary period (9-12 months)

 

Ability to:

  • Move through buildings to monitor equipment
  • Operate or control small tools
  • Position self to access units and confined spaces
  • Ascend/descend to roofs, inside air handlers and other equipment areas in the college

  • Presentation and communication to prepare procedures, reports, bids and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences at all levels of the college.

  • Ability and commitment to collaborate and develop effective relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and at different levels in the college. 

 

Preferred Qualification 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Sciences and Building Technology or related field of study
  • 5 or more years of supervisory experience
  • 3 years of leadership experience in higher education
  • 5 years of experience as a supervisor administrating collective bargaining agreements
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws
  • Knowledge of MnSCU or similar higher education policies and procedures
  • Ability to manage and resolve conflicts and knowledge of mediation techniques
  • Proven ability to read and understand Auto Cad and Architects and Engineers specifications
