Pressroom Manager
Pressroom Manager - Press Manager - Sun Sentinel Manage pressroom and platemaking operations to produce high-quality, on-time newspaper and commercial print products by directing and coordinating the work of supervisors. Coordinate efforts with other department managers and supervisors to ensure equipment is operating at the highest quality level and schedules are detailed and communicated to ensure performance targets are met.
Responsibilities:
•Select, orient, train and evaluate staff. Encourage professional growth and development of job skills to meet the short and long-term requirements of the pressroom. Hold regularly scheduled meetings with crew supervisors to ensure good communication and adherence to good employee relation practices.
•Oversee press operations to ensure acceptable quality (such as color matching, registration and proper ink densities), meeting of delivery targets, adherence to safe and compliant workplace practices, waste reduction and cleanliness procedures. Ensure operational logs and reports are filed timely for all reports on daily and nightly production, problems or unusual conditions.
•Assist production management in planning developing, implementing and evaluating press room policies and procedures, improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of publications by implementing changes in working conditions or processes and/or use of equipment to increase efficiency of the department.
•Oversee mechanical operation, reporting mechanical problems or potential improvements, working with crew supervisors to assure completion of work orders, troubleshoot when necessary to identify mechanical problems, working with maintenance support staff to schedule time for press maintenance. Maintain related logs and reports.
•Develop and manage budget, report on variances to budget, prepare on-going projections and variance reports, develop requests for new programs and capital projects, oversee departmental supply inventory to ensure adequate supply of operating materials.
•Perform a variety of additional managerial, administrative and press room duties to assure attainment of Courant and departmental goals.
•Schedule can be somewhat irregular with weekends included.
Requirements/Qualifications:
•High school equivalency, business management courses helpful.
•7+ years’ press operation experience or equivalent.
•5+ years’ supervisory experience.
•Excellent managerial skills with emphasis on positive employee relations.
•Demonstrated training and development skills.
•Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills.
•Demonstrated interviewing/ employee selection skills.
Revenue/budgetary/Staff Responsibility: Develops and adheres to budget. Make salary recommendations for staff. Manages assistant managers, crew supervisors and staff.
