This class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for perfusion services in accordance with hospital policies and safety guides. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: 
Receives general supervision from the Director of Perfusion or an employee of higher grade. 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: 
Leads perfusion staff as assigned.

Schedule: 40hours per week, Mon - Fri, 7:30am - 4:00pm with 30-minute unpaid meal break

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 
Plans workflow and determines priorities; schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work; assists in the development and implementation of monitoring policies and procedures; participates in clinical care plan development, process improvement initiatives, staff education and adverse event reporting and review; assesses current technology and recommends new technology for enhanced clinical care where appropriate; reviews patient’s history, consults with surgeon or physician, and obtains necessary information to set up and operate heart-lung machine and related equipment; prepares, cleans and test equipment to ensure proper functioning; as prescribed by physician and under physician’s direction, administers some types of anesthesia and medications via the extracorporeal circuit; monitors and observes patient’s physiological variables such as blood temperature, blood composition and flow rate, and adjusts equipment to maintain normal body functions; takes corrective action when abnormal situations arise, and keeps surgeon and anesthesiologist fully informed about patient’s condition at all times; documents and reviews data as determined by perfusion protocols or surgical team/hospital protocols; operates other mechanical devices to assist in the conversion of blood and blood products during surgery; provides extended long-term support of patient’s circulation outside of the operating room; collaborates with ancillary professional staff, physicians and care teams for primary cardiac surgery ; participates in institutional case review and care plan development of both individual patients and overall hospital mission; participates in appropriate inventory control and management and assures cost containment for all required inventory; conducts data management for clinical review and quality assurance; may participate in research; keeps knowledge current with related data/technological advances that relates to the field; performs other related duties. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY: 
Considerable knowledge of extracorporeal equipment; considerable knowledge of the principles and practice of perfusion services; knowledge of basic science with strong background in biology and chemistry; knowledge of principles of laboratory analysis; knowledge of biomedical engineering; knowledge of relevant State, Federal or accreditation agencies laws, regulations and guidelines; knowledge of patient safety guidelines; considerable knowledge of data management and quality assurance compliance reporting; knowledge of evidence based best practices related to perfusion services current standards of care; considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; demonstrated competency in dealing with all age groups; ability to work as a team member; ability to work under stressful conditions. 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: 
General Experience. 
Three (3) years adult and/or pediatric clinical perfusion experience. 

Special Requirement 

• Must possess and maintain during employment a CT State Perfusionist license.
• May need to travel to additional hospitals.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 
Exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, chemicals and explosive gases. Environment is climate controlled.
